Practical coaching for children, teens and families

Help Your Child Understand Themselves and Handle Life With Greater Confidence

Practical coaching for upper-primary students and teens who feel overwhelmed, stuck, unmotivated or unsure of themselves.

We help young people recognise the patterns affecting school, friendships and life at home, then build practical responses they can use when pressure rises.

When something keeps getting in the way

Your Child May Know What to Do but Struggle to Access It Under Pressure

Your child may be capable, caring and full of potential, yet still find it difficult to use what they know when school, friendships or family life becomes demanding.

Confidence Has Dropped

They avoid trying, speak negatively about themselves or become highly affected by mistakes and setbacks.

Motivation Is Disappearing

Schoolwork, routines or activities that once felt manageable now create avoidance, delay or repeated conflict.

Small Demands Create Large Reactions

A request, change or disappointment quickly becomes overwhelm, withdrawal, anger or complete shutdown.

Friendships Feel Exhausting

Social situations, misunderstandings, exclusion or uncertainty take up significant emotional energy.

The Same Conflict Keeps Returning

Everyone understands the conversation afterwards, but the same pattern returns when pressure rises again.

You Keep Second-Guessing Your Response

It is difficult to know when to push, pause, maintain the boundary or adjust what is being asked.

These experiences do not automatically mean something is wrong with your child or that anyone has failed. They suggest that the pattern needs to be understood before another strategy is added.

Who your family will work with

Young People Are Not Problems to Fix. Families Are Not to Blame.

Dylan helps families slow difficult situations down, understand what may be driving the pattern and build a response that can be used outside the coaching room.

The approach is warm, direct and strengths-based. It respects the young person while remaining honest about patterns that are not helping. Parents and caregivers are supported without being handed another unrealistic routine or generic list of strategies.

Coaching can be adapted for autistic young people, young people with ADHD and young people experiencing anxiety. Language, pace, visual tools, interests, sensory needs and family involvement are adjusted to the person rather than expecting the person to fit a standard method.

Review what happened without becoming trapped in shame, try a different response and rebuild trust after conflict.

Understand the pattern before adding another strategy

From a Difficult Pattern to a Practical Next Step

Social Emotional Performance Coaching slows the situation down. We explore what happens, what the young person experiences, what makes the moment harder and what a more useful response could look like.

Sessions may use conversation, interests, visual tools, practical activities, rehearsal, planning and reflection. The method is adapted to the young person’s age, strengths, communication style, sensory needs, environment and readiness.

Example coaching tool SOAR planning
What would a more useful response look like in real life?
S: See the outcome Define a change that can be recognised in a real situation.
O: Own the reason Connect the goal with something that matters to the young person.
A: Act in small steps Choose a realistic action that can be practised between sessions.
R: Respond to barriers Prepare for the pressure points most likely to interrupt the plan.

The strategy must fit the young person and the environment in which they are expected to use it.

1

Understand What Is Happening

We explore the concern, the context, what tends to happen and what has already been tried.

2

Define Meaningful Progress

The goal becomes specific enough to recognise, such as starting with less avoidance or recovering more quickly after conflict.

3

Build a Response That Fits

The language, strategy and support are adapted to the young person’s strengths, needs, context and readiness.

4

Practise in Real Situations

The young person and family use the agreed strategy between sessions without turning it into another large demand.

5

Review Honestly

We examine what worked, what did not and what needs to change using examples, observations and agreed checkpoints.

The initial consultation is the recommended first step. It is 60 minutes, costs $160 including GST and requires no long-term commitment. The fee is credited towards a three or six-month retainer when continuing within seven days.

Using NDIS funding?

Social Emotional Performance Coaching May Be Claimable

NDIS funding may be used when coaching is disability-related, directly connected with a participant goal and purchased from an appropriate support category. Start with a plan-fit check before booking.

Funding is individual and approval cannot be guaranteed. A diagnosis does not automatically make coaching claimable.

Check the participant goal The support must work towards a stated NDIS outcome
Confirm the management type Self-managed, plan-managed or NDIA-managed
Use an itemised invoice Clear support description, ABN, date and amount

The First Conversation Creates Clarity Before Commitment

The purpose of the initial consultation is to understand the situation and recommend what may be useful, not to pressure the family into a long-term package.

1

Book the Initial Consultation

Choose an available online or in-person 60-minute appointment.

2

Share What Has Been Happening

We discuss the concern, context, previous strategies, family involvement and what feels most important now.

3

Clarify a Useful Next Step

We recommend focused coaching, joint work, ongoing support or another professional when coaching is not the right service.

4

Continue Only While It Is Useful

Goals, frequency and strategies are adjusted when observations and real experiences suggest a change is needed.

Professional boundaries

Coaching Supports Skill Development, Not Clinical Treatment

Social Emotional Performance Coaching focuses on self-awareness, practical skills, planning, communication and everyday action.

It does not diagnose or treat mental health conditions and does not replace counselling, psychology, medical care, crisis support, diagnostic assessment or school risk-management procedures.

When a young person’s needs fall outside the coaching scope, the concern will be discussed honestly and referral to an appropriately qualified professional or service will be recommended.

Important to know
  • Coaching is private within legal, ethical and duty-of-care limits.
  • Parent or guardian involvement is discussed during intake.
  • The young person’s dignity and privacy remain important.
  • Coaching does not provide emergency or crisis response.
  • Message support is for practical coaching follow-up only.

In an emergency, contact emergency services or an appropriate crisis service rather than waiting for a coaching response.

Frequently asked questions

Common Questions From Parents and Caregivers

Is this counselling or therapy?

No. This is practical, non-clinical coaching focused on self-awareness, skill development, planning, communication and everyday action. It does not diagnose or treat mental health conditions.

Does my child need a diagnosis?

No diagnosis is required to access coaching. Suitability is based on the young person’s goals, needs and whether the concern falls within the coaching scope.

Do you work with ADHD, autism or anxiety?

Yes. Coaching can be adapted for autistic young people, young people with ADHD and young people experiencing anxiety. The work may focus on confidence, regulation, executive functioning, communication, school engagement, self-advocacy and practical routines. Coaching does not diagnose or clinically treat these conditions.

Is this only for behavioural problems?

No. Families may seek coaching for confidence, motivation, school engagement, friendships, communication, pressure, emotional regulation or repeated patterns at home. Behaviour may be part of the concern, but it does not need to be the main focus.

What age groups do you coach?

This pathway is designed primarily for upper-primary students and teenagers. Language, activities, pace and family involvement are adjusted to age and developmental needs.

What happens during a session?

Sessions may use conversation, interests, visual tools, rehearsal, planning, practical activities and reflection. Each session connects understanding with a realistic next step.

What if my child does not want to talk about feelings?

Coaching does not depend on prolonged emotional conversation. Interests, visual tools, practical tasks, planning, rehearsal and real situations can be used to build engagement at a pace that fits the young person.

Will parents or caregivers be involved?

Involvement is discussed during the initial consultation. It may include intake, practical home support, joint sessions or progress conversations while respecting the young person’s privacy and dignity.

How will we know whether coaching is helping?

Progress is reviewed through agreed goals, examples and observations. This may include participation, communication, follow-through, recovery after pressure or more consistent use of a strategy.

Can you communicate with my child’s school?

Communication with educators may be useful in some situations. It requires appropriate consent, a clear purpose and respect for the young person’s privacy.

Are sessions available online?

Yes. Secure video sessions are available across Australia, with in-person appointments available in Brisbane.

Can we begin with one session?

Yes. The initial consultation is a 60-minute starting point that costs $160 including GST. No long-term commitment is required and the fee can be credited towards a retainer when continuing within seven days.

What happens if I cancel?

Cancellations made at least 48 hours before the session do not attract a fee. Cancellations between 24 and 48 hours attract a 50% fee. Cancellations with less than 24 hours notice attract the full session fee. Retainer clients receive one grace cancellation per term, which must be rescheduled within the active term.

What if my child needs clinical or crisis support?

When the concern falls outside the coaching scope, referral to an appropriately qualified professional or service will be recommended. Coaching does not provide emergency or crisis support.
